When we got saddled with McCain as the nominee, I thought “well, it can’t get any worse.” I may have spoken a bit prematurely:
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and defeated contender for the GOP presidential nomination, is currently at the top of John McCain’s short list for a running mate. At least that’s the word from a top McCain fundraiser and longtime Republican moneyman who has spoken to McCain’s inner circle. The fundraiser is less than thrilled with the idea of Huckabee as the vice presidential nominee, and many economic conservatives—turned off by the populist tone of Huckabee’s campaign and his tax record as governor—are likely to share that marked lack of enthusiasm.
The last thing we need is two faux-conservatives on a national ticket. One is bad enough. If McCain wants my vote, and others like me, he’s going to have to work damn hard to get it. Right now, there’s virtually no chance that I will pull the lever for him this November. But if he chooses a solid, conservative running mate, I might change my tune. If he puts the Huckster on the ticket, then that’s about the surest way to guarantee that I, and others like me, won’t bother.
Of course, it wouldn’t surprise me if he did choose Huckabee. McCain’s been saying “screw you” to the base for as long as I can remember. This would be the ultimate “f-you” that he could throw at conservative voters.

Well Brian, don’t hold back. Tell us what you really think.I do agree with you. Why did only these losers get to run for President?
May 12th, 2008 at 2:24 pmJust because he’s been loyal is not a reason to make him the VP choice. If McCain chooses Huckabee he’s an idiot. There are more people that he would lose in the middle to just gain a few mod-conservative Christians. Maybe McCain doesn’t really want it, or maybe the TriLat Comm. or others in charge, tell him that Obama must be POSTUS. He would win if he chose a young, center-right minority like Michael Steele or Bobby Jindal.

Like your idea of VP picks. But Jindal really is needed in LA. Lots to fix there. Steele, on the other hand, Would be a excellent choice. Then Steele could run for Pres and be the first black Pres for our side. I don’t think I will give McCain any points for picking someone that would actually make sense. We are so screwed….
