You know, you listen to the left and they claim the right are the book-banners/burners in this country. Well, guess what? Not so:

A federal law that will soon go into effect could have some startling consequences, including the possible banning of children from libraries unless certain books are pulled from the shelves.

The law is called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act and it is designed to protect children all over the country from the dangers of lead.

Experts said there could be trace amounts of lead in books because of the ink. That’s why the government wants all books, old and new, tested for lead.

(snip)

The law goes into effect on Feb. 10. After that day, all products for children under 12, including books, games, toys and even clothing, must be tested for lead.

Critics argue lead testing is expensive. For a book it could between $300 and $600.

“We just can’t afford to do that, and most of the tests would destroy the books. So, we just think this is crazy,” said Emily Sheketoff, of the American Libraries Association.

The American Libraries Assocation is lobbying Capitol Hill to exclude public and school libraries from the new law. If not, it said millions of books will be taken off the shelves and destroyed or kids won’t be allowed in the libraries.

All snark aside, I won’t go so far as to say Democrats planned this, or that they want to keep children from reading books and whatnot, but it does illustrate a good point. A consistent trait among Democrats is they constantly pass legislation without thinking it over and later find out that it has unintended consequences. They never stop to think about how this Bill will impact consumers, or how that Bill will harm businesses, and so on. They get it in their heads that it sounds good, sounds compassionate, and, therefore, they simply must pass it into law.

That’s how we got into a lot of the problems we’re currently in, because feel-good legislation was passed over the last sixty or so years and nobody stopped to think what might be the results of said legislation. Most of the entitlement spending of the Great Society programs, for example, had bad results. Virtually every social problem in this country today, be it declining education, high divorce rates, crime and drug abuse, kids having kids, and people sitting around on their asses all day long — and getting paid to do it — can be traced to some liberal Democrat feel-good legislation that was meant to solve a problem, but failed to do so. In fact, in a lot of instances they ended up making things worse.

And yet Democrats never get blamed for this! Worse still, they want us to allow them to keep on doing it for at least another four years!
