Just saw this over at Politico:
GOP Whip Eric Cantor thinks his party can retake the House in next year’s midterm elections — and accused Democrats like Rahm Emanuel of “overreacting” to the economic crisis by embarking on a federal spending spree.
(snip)
Cantor parted with some in his party by saying the “jury is still out” on Barack Obama’s presidency and urged everyone to withhold judgment: “We’re only coming up to 100 days.”
But he quickly pivoted, saying that Obama’s overreach might propel the GOP back to power — and fast.
“I don’t remove the prospect that we would take the majority back in 2010,” he said.
Cantor said Republicans needed to express “contrition” for running up deficits in the early 00s and predicted his party was on pace to pick up a number of seats “somewhere in the mid-20s” consistent with recent historical patterns.
“You just asked me if I think we can take over the House. I think [the budget] plays into that as the country sees the unfolding of the Obama agenda… There’s going to be a lot of rejection by the American people in increasing the size government in every aspect…(Those) is tired policies of the past.
Naturally, the lefties over at Firedoglake think he’s out of his mind. I’m going to tell you something right here and now, if the left thinks the American people are going to sit back and watch government spend and spend and spend while raising our taxes to the stratosphere without there being a backlash, they’ve got another thing coming.
I live in an area of Iowa that is heavily Democrat. Been a Democrat area as long as I’ve been alive (and you can tell). I talk with these people — Democrats — everyday, whether it’s in the course of my work, out to dinner, waiting in a check-out line, whatever. ALL of them are very, very upset right now. They’re sick and tired of getting taxed to death and seeing nothing in return. They’re tired of watching every bum in town living it up on THEIR money. They’re starting (hopefully) to wise up and realize that you can’t tax or spend your way to prosperity. And you just know this isn’t a local thing, this has to be going on around the country.
I was in line today at a gas station ($42 to fill up my truck), and the guy ahead of me was buying a pack of cigarettes. They were nearly $7. He became very, very angry and started yelling at the clerk about it. She said “Sir, I don’t set the prices. They went up because of some tax that just kicked in.” Well, that only made him even more pissed off.
So I decided to chime in (just to stir the pot, I’m like that sometimes). I said “Who did you vote for, sir?” and he replied “Obama.” I replied “I bet you’re real happy with that decision now. You vote for Democrats, you get higher taxes on everything. Always, without fail. It’s like a by-law written in their charter or something.” He just stormed out, but he knew — as did everyone who witnessed this — that I was absolutely correct.
Democrats take control of government, whether it is local, state, or national, and one of the first things they do is start to spend money they don’t have. YOUR money. Then they realize they don’t actually have the money, so they have to raise it (never occurs to them to cut spending like, say, a family on a limited budget would have to do). So they start raising existing taxes and inventing new ones. If they could tax the air we breathe, they’d certainly do it.
Take a look at your monthly expenses sometime. Just save your receipts and bills for one month, then sit down and go over them. You’ll immediately notice how much you’re being nickeled and dimed these frauds and crooks. You pay such things as sales tax, income tax, tobacco tax (if you smoke), fuel tax, taxes on your utility services, property taxes, taxes on dividends or interest, tolls, and the list goes on and on and on. It’s literally eating us alive. And they wonder why we can’t save money these days. They wonder why people are upset over the fact that we work hard, we pay our taxes, and we sit by and watch all these jerks get a free ride simply for being lazy or irresponsible (I’m not talking about the people who actually need and deserve help, mind you).
Make no mistake, the Democrats are headed down the same path they’ve always gone down. That path eventually led to their loss of the majority in the 1994 elections. It’s also the same mistake the Republicans made, and it caused them to lose the majority. The Democrats are acting true to form, and when 2010 rolls around, they’re going to find themselves in the minority once again when people have the chance to vote on their agenda.
People are sick of paying through the nose when it comes to taxes, and they’re sick of watching government explode and spending soar out of control. They want responsible leadership, and if the Republicans can find some candidates who fit that bill, the Democrats will lose, and lose big.
